New Curriculum for South African schools

South African Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga yesterday announced changes to the South African education system.

The new curriculum Schooling 2025 would replace the highly criticised outcomes based education (OBE) system introduced in 1998. However, OBE would not be completely scrapped but would be modified to improve the performance of school pupils.

The new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement will replace the existing method, where assessment requirements were mapped onto the achievement of outcomes and assessment standards

  1. I read somewhere that the school subjects are going to be reduced to 6 subjects as from 2011. Do you know which subjects are going and which subjects are staying? Or are some subjects just being interegrated into one subject? My children will be grades 4 and 6 next year.

    • I am not sure, but maybe you will find the answer in the Department of Basic Education’s “Action Plan to 2014: towards the realisation of Schooling 2025″ that was published in the Government Gazette, No. 33434, Notice 752 0f 2010 (Available under the Education Documents Page of this Blog). Or alternatively you will have to contact the Dept of Basic Education directly.

  6. The caps system has failed miserably and is the cause of higher failure rates. By the end of the second term teachers and im pretty sure ‘South African Minister of Basic Education’, Angie Motshekga were shocked at how many grade 10 learners of 2012 had already failed the year.But nothing less could have been expected and i find it amusing that people are even surprised at the results. How can you possibly expect grade 9 learners to go into their senior phase of high school with no foundation year and be expected to cope. What i mean by this is that grade 9 learners entered grade 10 and were expected to be able to cope with work that is of grade 11 level, missing out on one of high schools very important years, grade 10. The grade 10 and 11 learners are currently doing the exact same work thanks to the new caps system. You see the grade 11’s are still on the (OBE) system which is suited to their level of schooling and are cope just fine and infact are truelly achieving excellent results. Top grade 10 students are for the first time struggling to obtain the marks they are so used to achieving and are find it more and more challenging to receive distinctions for their subjects. Both the work load and level have doubled causing unbelievable amounts of stress not only for the learners but the teachers as well. Its reached a point where teachers are so behind that they are telling learners to go home and go over certain parts of the work themselves just to keep up with the curriculum. The rate at which we’re going grade10 classes of 2013 are going to be overflowing with learners due to the amount of failures predicted for the end of the year which in turn will lead to the pushing through of learners which are not close to ready for grade 11. (working on matric level work) This will only deprive leaerners and the future economy a chance to flourish. Despite the fact that the education departments see how caps has been an utter fail they insist on continuing with the system through to grade 11 and the most important year,martic and are even going as far as bringing the caps system to primary schools across SA. I’ve written this comment not to be rebelious or judgmental but to stress that this problem should be rectified whilst still in its early stages. I left this till the end to tell you that i am actually a fellow grade 10 learner working under the caps system because i wanted you to read this with an open mind and not have your oppinion obscured by my age. I attend Table View High School in the Western Cape and i just felt the need to inform you first hand about the damage the system is creating and I desperately long for the OBE system to be reinstated. I just want to say that the system is also discouraging learners to continue their studies post matric due to not being able to meet the universities requirements academically. I sincerely hope to here from someone concerning this urgent matter..

  8. Hi Johan, I volunteer as a rural primary school on the West Coast. The grade 7s leave primary school to go to a high school in Atlantis where drugs and gangsterism is rife. We want to start a funded private high school for them and are looking for a more affordable or free curriculum. Can you help please? Helani

  10. To me I think we as South African we lost it with these non stop changes in our education with fruitless outcomes. Before OBE our education was good only thing was left, was to enrich it with the new techonology not to change the system completely

  11. How is the caps system going to affect the private schools in their marking system because at a school my daughter presently goes to and she is in Gr5, their markin is 80%class & 20% tests. This is already so frustrating because my daughter is a 85% and above in all her tests. but in her reports her marks are below average in the class. She is normally in the top six for high marks in the class but falls below average in her reports because of this 80-20 marking system. how can children that are way below in tests have higher averages than my child. if a child is way below in tests, its hard to believe that they are above average in class. My child excels in all her projects & class work. Plse help me?
