The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) launched its Report on School-based Violence on 12 March 2008. This report is the result of Public Hearings on School-based Violence in the Western Cape Province that were held during September 2006. These hearings were conducted after the SAHRC received numerous complaints regarding school-based violence, which impedes on the rights of learners and educators to work in a safe and violence-free environment. The objectives of the Public Hearings were to further explore the nature, extent and impact of school-based violence on the right to basic education. According to the HSRC this report together with the recommendations made in it, provide a basis to properly contextualize and understand the complexity of the problem as well as offering a comprehensive and inclusive response to it.
